A commercial bus driver in Lagos, Mr Idris Shittu, on Saturday allegedly attacked a task force operative, Sergeant Adepoju Oluwasogo, with an iron rod during the environmental sanitation.

Oluwasogo, who is attached to Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Task Force), is in hospital.

According to the task force Chairman, Olubukola Abe, a Superintendent of Police (SP), Oluwasogo was among the security team on patrol during the exercise.

Abe led other management staff to visit Oluwasogo at the Emergency Ward at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

Abe said the driver of a bus marked XX643GX who was held for alleged violation of sanitation laws, reportedly drove the police officer to an undisclosed location in Alapere, Ketu and assaulted him. The police officer, he claimed was “thoroughly beaten up and injured with iron-rod on his left eye and his right shoulder”.

Oluwasogo’s right shoulder was dislocated when he was rescued by other Task Force patrol team.

The task force claimed that Shittu blamed the devil for the act, quoting him as saying that he never intended to hit Oluwasogo with the iron-rod.

Abe appealed to motorists to always comply with the Lagos State Traffic and Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Laws.

Also yesterday, the Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit said it arrested 36 persons for environmental offences during Saturday’s exercise.

A statement by Mr Adebayo Taofiq, the Public Affairs Officer, quoted Abe as saying that 30 men and six women were arrested and charged to court.
